The $38 Million Reform
There is a particular kind of political chutzpah that goes beyond ordinary hypocrisy. It's when you spend $38 million in largely untraceable money to eliminate an independent redistricting commission — and then tell voters you're doing it to protect democracy. That's what's happening in Virginia right now. The April 21 voting deadline for Amendment 1 is approaching, and it deserves considerably more national attention than it's receiving [1].
If Amendment 1 passes, Virginia's bipartisan redistricting commission — approved by voters in 2020 with 66% support — will be abolished. Mapmaking authority reverts to the Democrat-controlled state legislature. Republicans estimate the resulting gerrymander could flip Virginia's congressional delegation from its current 6-5 Democratic edge to something closer to 10-1 before a single November ballot is cast [1]. One referendum. One partisan legislature. A six-seat congressional swing. And the clock is already running.
